Flexible Cystoscopy

I shall be leaving shortly to go to a local hospital for a flexible cystoscopy procedure.

I have been referred after seeing blood in my pee. My local GP was fantastic but I have to admit that I am not looking forward to today, it's not so much the procedure but just the indignity of it.

The blood is gone but I am still having some ill effects so I know I have to go but I am sure it is an infection and not the big "C".

I have purposely done no "internet" research about the procedure and am just pretending that it isn't happening. I've been up since 5am not able to sleep- partly due to the bladder issue I have to admit.

I am more concerned for the poor hospital staff, imaging having to do this day in day out- how awful. Normally I'd have some witty one liners queued up but I know I am going to be speechless.

Wish me luck! Legs crossed burning sensation Jim.

  • Have no advice or experience of this but good luck :)
  • My OH has had these and says they are really not so bad; they do usually put an anaesthetic gel 'up' first to help. It's also usually a quick procedure, because the medics can see any problems - or not - very quickly.

The doctors and nurses do thousands of these, so they've seen it all before (so to speak!) There are apparently many worse procedures to perform, according to one nurse my OH asked.

Try to relax and not worry, it will all be over before you know it.

Hope this helps, and best wishes for tomorrow.

All done! Great hospital staff, very interesting to watch but I did see stars at one point! Relived that bit is over next stop is CT scan and maybe a small operation. Going to have a nice mug of coffee now.

Hi jim, sorry I missed your post yesterday. I've been having both the flexible & rigid cystoscopy since 2012, & have had 9 procedures now. Don't worry about the hospital staff, some of them can get very passionate about their work, as one Urologists explained that he was going to do a loop the loop during one cystoscopy  Let us know how you get on with the scan, all the best jim.

9 times! You win hands down.

Got to admit I am in some serious discomfort today and have had to come home from work- nearly in tears with pain trying to pee. If this is the same tomorrow I'll have to go back to the Dr's.

The cystoscopy can aggravate the bladder jim, I'd agree to get it checked out with the DR if things don't improve. Actually I usually call the nurse at my local surgery & they fit me in the same day, just to rule out any infection. I've had several UTI's but usually after the rigid cystoscopy rather than the flexi.

This is the reason I wouldn't go unless it were absolutely unavoidable. My urethra/bladder is tetchy at the best of times, I can imagine having something shoved up it would make things very uncomfortable indeed! :(

Presume jim is male, so the instrument would have to 'travel further..'

Hope it improves for you soon worried jim. Bladder problems are horrible!

So post #8 was made @ 12:25pm about me coming home early from work in pain, by 18:00 I was in an ambulance being rushed to hospital after collapsing in pain at home. CT scan showed kidney stone and I was admitted till Sunday and that I may need an op.

Fortunately the pain was gone with a combination of drugs by yesterday morning and I was discharged @ 20:00 last night.

I feel okay today, a bit tired and sore. I may have passed the stone or it may have moved to an area that isn't causing pain. Quite an eventful few days. Big thanks to all the amazing NHS team that helped me, as ever I am eternally grateful.
