Best S&S ISA for £30K+

I'll shortly be transferring my ISA to a new platform and wonder which will be most cost effective for amounts above £30K. I recall reading that this was the sum where charges from some providers become an issue, but can't remember the fine detail! Looking at CSD - how favourable will this be in the longer term as I don't really want to switch again.

  • Hi,

I think the usual switch is from a % charge to a fixed fee charge as a portfolio grows.

You could start by having a look at this comparison... I'm not sure how up to date it is so would recommend double checking the fees.

Which platform are you with now?
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

Fidelity, fee-free for a couple more months. A passive approach, with regular deposits to VLS 60. This year's allowance will take the total to around £25K, and I'll probably be putting the full 2016-17 allowance in early in the new financial year.

It's probably a good idea to initiate the transfer before using next year's allowance, I guess.

It probably is, but you could open a new ISA at the new platform with next year's contribution, then transfer the rest at your leisure.

Thanks for the link! A very useful table, and recently updated.

So, I think I can rule out CSD and other percentage-fee platforms, and look just at flat-fee brokers. I'm now tending towards Selftrade for funds, although Halifax also seems like a viable option. I'd really appreciate some perspectives on these and posters' experiences of other platforms as I'm going round in circles!

Oh dear :( Reading further, Selftrade seems to get quite a bit of bad press.

I did turn up the following link but maybe it's somewhat dated; I'm guessing that this is the time of year when new products are being marketed http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/personalfinance/investing/isas/10611058/Tables-cheapest-fund-supermarkets-for-Isa-investing.html

Does anyone know of a more recent table comparing products?

Think they nicked that table from snowman!

You can have a look at comparefundsplatforms.com or the Lang cat, which should allow you to play with some numbers for comparison.
  • I recently moved some funds to AJ Bell Youinvest, based on good feedback here. I nearly went with iii but after reading the thread on this forum, ran away as fast as I could. Thus far You invest have been great, transfers of existing pensions have been quick and trouble free. I prefer a good user experience over the lowest fees. I checked some online comparison guides but none really tell you about customer satisfaction. Maybe gurgling the name of each platform will get you user reviews?
