  • Have you run cc cleaner, to tidy up the registry, and remove redundant files?

I've been having freezes and lock-ups ever since my computer was born (it is a self-build). Am I right in thinking it's probably a memory issue? If I got new memory is it just a case of swapping it over? There won't be any issues with Windows 10 or anything?

I see 2x4Gb for about £33 on Amazon, which isn't too pricey I think.
Do more tests before assuming anything, swopping out components, disabling start-up items & services, booting into safe mode.
It's easy to assume wrong & jump to conclusions.

If you built computer, assume you have idea what to try or should do.

Could be motherboard, other components, hardware or software.

At best that will do no harm but not improve things. At worst that will break things.
  • Antivirus (two of at the same time) Malware (any number of) bad DNS (since it seems it's Browser issue)...why assume memory ?

    Memory I have is: 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1333MHz 240-pin DIMM CL9, Corsair if I recall.

I've not run CCleaner, I'm on a clean install of 10 as of Monday.

    No multiple Av's or anything.

Bad DNS? I was with Sky before, and now with Virgin. Issues have been present with both. I don't know much about DNS, by 'much' read 'nothing'.

So far though, I've not had a freeze/lock-up since updating the bios. If it happens again I'll know it's not that.

The reason for my assumption it was memory related, was based on what I've read before. And I think someone else told me before it was likely a memory issue. I'm sure I asked about this ages ago on another forum. It's been a long-standing issue.

Corrupt cache files shouldn't cause a system-wide freeze. And it's never a good idea to use automated registry cleaners without carefully analysing the entries that are to be removed.

Windows 98 and prior were susceptible to registry corruptions, and butchering the registry with a cleaner usually fixed more issues than it caused. But Windows XP and later are much better. You should never need to run a registry cleaner on such systems -- they are liable to cause more problems than they fix. If necessary, edit the registry manually to remove unwanted entries.

Your whole PC was locking up and freezing, wasn't it (i.e. not just the web browser)? If so, it won't be anything to do with DNS.

    Yay! Fingers crossed, then!

I think it's the whole pc that locks up, however most time is spent in a browser so that's where I see it. It also freezes Skype. And downloads happening are lost due to connection dropping when it happens too.

Updated bios hasn't helped, it's still happening unfortunately.

I've installed memtest to a USB, I'm going to run it tomorrow, I believe it takes a number of hours to run.

Memtest has been run, found no errors. I'm at a loss.

try removing one memory stick and run it for a day , then try alternate m/stick for a day

you might want to go into the bios settings and check that memory timing is at default or fail safe

  • Is it wireless or wired ?I'm not sure it's a memory problem it could be a driver issue , is it just locking up when using the network card, eg can you open other programs? Have you looked in the event viewer for errors
