Is it too early to start switch?
I've switched a few times in the past, but this is the first time I've had an early exit penalty. With Cooperative Energy, Fix ends 31st March. Their customer service is beyond awful ...
Now, I know they can't charge if I leave in the last 50 days of that, but how soon can I safely start the switch process? Cheap Energy Club is suggesting I should do it soon, and tbh I can't get away from them fast enough!

As the registration request now starts after the initial quote literally straight after the quote, the earliest you will be able to request a change of supplier without incurring the exit fees is 49 days before the tariff ends.
If your tariff ends on 31st March you should get a quote this Thursday 11th Feb0 -
my thinking is, you can leave penalty free 49 days before you tariff ends.
Meaning you could start your switch 53 days before your tariff end date , as when moving there is a 14 day cooling off period for all suppliers , so when the move is complete you will be within your 49 days
for example some, are a 17 day switch , 14 days cooling of plus 3 days0 -

Under the rules Co-op have to contact you between 42-49 days before your tariff finishes to let you know its coming to an end.
Once you get this letter/email that is the point that you can safely start a switch. If they don't send you one (i.e. break the rules) then wait until 42 days before the tariff ends to start a switch.
Don't assume its 49 or 50 days - technically its not and you don't want to accidentally have to pay a penalty or be arguing about whether you are liable to one.
As such, I would start the switching process from around 21 February if your tariff ends at the end of March if you haven't already heard from the Co-op.

Aha! They have sent me a 'your contract ends soon' email, so I guess that means I can start the switch now?
Thanks for all help.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
iam confused , when i spoke to FU last week , i asked in theory, what the earliest date i can be moved to another supplier with out the fee , 12th Feb they said (my tariff also ends March 31st )
When it now seems this is the date you can start a switch0 -
As FU confirmed my leave yesterday via email , will this mean i will be charged the exit fee , as iam just outside the 49 days ?0
-
Spoken to FU , they confirmed the 49 days , is the date at which you move not the not the date, they confirm you wish to leave .
They said for example we could be notified 55 days before , but as long as the move happens 49 before or less , no exist fees0 -
The Co-operative T&C state 49 days, so it doesn't depend on getting anything from them. So for deals ending 31 March (or May) you can safely start on the 12th of the preceding month.0
