what contributes to failure of referencing during tenancy?

Hi,
I am due to sign up for a tenancy at a new property. I am worried though as they say if I fail referencing I lose my application fee and the holding deposit which totals to over £1000.
So does anyone happen to know what fails tenancy referencing? I have had one tenancy go bad where I moved out earlier but I don't believe the landlord took action as she said that she will keep my deposit. Other than that I have had 4+ tenancy agreement which I have paid my rent on time and completed. My current landlord is happy with me and said he will give me a positive reference if it comes to him.
Just did my credit rating check and both noddle and experian have said my rating is fair/middle and no reports against me.
So what do these letting agents check exactly? and what contributes to a negative/high risk credit rating? never missed a credit card repayment too!
Thanks.

Ask them for their criteria.

I did, the person said you fail if:
- your current landlord says you don't pay rent on time but I will pass this bit as my current landlord is happy with me.
- you fail your credit check (this is vague as she doesn't know which kind of score fails your credit check).0 -
That's what I mean.
Ask them the criteria for the credit check.
Scores are make believe.
!!!!!! your score is now 999,999,999 - it's rubbish.0 -

There's no such thing as a universal credit score. You'll be credit checked for things like bankruptcy, CCJs, the sort of things registered on your credit files when you don't pay your bills on time.0

Never filed for bankruptcy and never taken to court but I have never paid utility bills either other than my phone contract and car insurance since they've all been included in my rent previously.0 -
so would you guys advise against this agency? Seems like their pass/fail might be subjective, they could fail me for not having paid of my loans e.g. student loans.0

Can these reference companies somehow see what my dealings were with my previous landlords? I am only just worried about that one tenancy agreement that I did not follow but it was upon approval of the landlord that I could leave early.0
