Whatever anyone paid before you is irrelevant - they can claim back their overpayment. You should be charged from the day you lived in, to 31 March, divided over however many instalments they offer you.0 -
What actual date did you move in on/assume responsibility for the council tax?
Also, you don't know what the previous occupants were refunded - and they will have been.0 -

Simple - the council would calculate the council tax due from you and the previous occupier from the day you and they moved in and out.
For example, if the previous occupier paid 7 payments out of 10 at £100 this would mean £700 has been paid out of a total annual council tax bill of £1000.
Now, if the previous occupier then moves out before the next payment of £100 is due, this means that they have overpaid their share of the council tax and any such overpayment will be refunded to them by the council.
The council would then bill the next occupier - you - for the rest of the tax year and this is why you are being asked to pay the council tax for the remaining 145 days of the council tax billing period and, as you have noted, it's been broken down to a daily rate.
If you now pay it and decide to move out before the 145 days are up then you also will get a refund.
Have you claimed any allowances to which you are entitled, such as 25% off for single person occupancy, etc etc?0 -
Thank you. Most helpful. I didn't realise that refunds were given for monthly instalments like that. I never thought of it as an "overpayment" in that respect.0

The refunds are not for the monthly instalments, as council tax is charged daily. We refund for every day you have overpaid.
The monthly amounts are just for the convenience of the bill and don't bear much relation to the amount accrued in the month.0 -
My council let me pay by weekly direct debit into March on a recent property I purchased as a BTL. My thinking is I wouldn't have 'overpaid' as much once the tenant was in place, as I envisaged a battle to get my money back.
I was partly correct - I ended up over paying by a week and took 4 weeks to get it back...0
