Kitchen Decoration

Options
I am thinking of decorating my kitchen later in the year as it is (apparently - according to an estate agent and members of my family) dated.

I am not inclined to go down the route of ripping the entire kitchen out and starting again as I know this can cost thousands, so what I was planning on doing was painting the walls a different colour, get different handles for the cupboard doors and paint the tiles with tile paint. I would change the lights.

I am just wondering if I am wasting my time and money by "make shifting" doing up my kitchen or if this is something people have done before with success?

Hi from another pollyanna . The shabby chic thread has lots of kitchen ideas including a kitchen revamp by emma kate which is lovely .

I did similar with my kitchen. Wanted it tarted up to sell but didn't want to spend out for a brand new kitchen .

All the cupboards, worktops and flooring are the existing ones.

I had a new draining board and tap fitted
    New light fitting
    New light switch
    Re-grouted the tiles
Painted the walls and ceiling (would def recommend you use kitchen paint)

Ooh, hadn't thought of changing the sink. This is something else I could do.

I know the kitchen has been there forever, but I don't see anything fundamentally wrong with it, so thanks guys.

Are you wanting to do it up due to what others are saying? If you are happy enough with it, what's the problem? Of course, if you are going to be selling, and have been advised to tart it up a bit, then that's a different story.

I'm not sure painting tiles would look good but regrouting would freshen them up.

I gave my old kitchen a new lease of life by painting the doors. It saw me through a couple of years until I saw a new one I fancied.

Not sure exactly what's dated about it. Maybe you could post some photos (or similar images) on here and get some mse idea:money:.
  • I've seen tiles that have been done up with specialist tile paint, and they didn't look particularly great. I'd stick with re-doing the grout, as others have advised.

Can you post pics of your kitchen? Some kitchen styles just cant be rescued and others are classics that just need a bit of tweaking to modernise them.
If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!
  • Have a look on Freecycle to see if anyone is getting rid of any kitchen units It could help with the refresh, maybe "new" doors on the existing cases?

Are you unhappy with kitchen or are your family unhappy with the kitchen?
    Who lives in the house?
If it's just you (i.e. not your family) what does it have to do with them?
What has an estate agent's opinion got to do with anything unless you are considering putting your house up for sale!
