Thinking of going self-employed. Peopleplus self-employment course?

Hi All, I got made redundant a few months ago and am thinking of going self-employed. Whilst at the job centre i picked up a leaflet for those who are thinking of going self-employed. A course designed to help people know how to do tax returns, register business ect. The company putting this on were peopleplus who i believe use to be A4E (A work programme company uh oh). I've only been unemployed 3 months since the redundancy so not likely to be referred to the "work programme" any time soon.

Just wondering if i ask to go on it (the self-employment course), am i basically signing myself upto the work programme?

Secondly, is there any other courses I can go on which aren't put on by these providers? Alternative free courses that anyone has been on, that are good?

thanks in advanced.

HMRC webinars are free online and shows you how to register as self-employed and complete a return etc. They have plenty on YouTube as well.
Please be polite to OPs and remember this is a site for Claimants and Appellants to seek redress against their bank, ex-boss or retailer. If they wanted morality or the view of the IoD or Bank they'd ask them.

Anything other than webinars available? I was hoping to go on some sort of course where its a bit more interactive and you can ask Qs ect. I've checked out my local library but it seems very general....like pop along for advice sort of thing.

This peopleplus one is a thirteen week course and each week goes through something new so seems quite substantial :/
  • Hi Cupid,

People Plus offer self employment advice on two contracts, one is work programme, and yes you'd have to be referred to it for the full two years.

Try asking your JCP advisor about the New Enterprise Allowance. This is a scheme that runs for 8 weeks and is very similar, but without tieing you in to the WP. It also has access to other funding and support options.

    Good luck!
