this makes me think it would be a good idea to ask your daughter to be aware of what she may do if her little group part company (it may be on good terms, but interests change)

This is a really good idea; I have known it happen to many people.

They should also discuss how they would hope to handle one of them meeting someone special, and wanting to travel/spend a significant amount of time with them. Obviously this doesn't mean they will do what they discussed prior to departure (love!) but it's good to talk about expectations beforehand, because it makes them both more aware of how the other person might be feeling, should it occur.

Even when it all goes belly up, it usually goes on to good things.

Most people who do a gap/working holiday tend to start in Sydney and then move on.

A group as stated won't always stuick together and any kind of lengthy lease in your daughter's name might "trap" her in Sydney.

How about a month long AirBnb booking. Long enough to get themselves sorted and decide if short term Sydney (or even that part of Sydney) is where they want to be staying but not so long it'd compromise their plans.

  • if she is on a working holiday visa, she will have to change jobs every 3 months anyway and lots of people end up in Melbourne. So renting a place is not great as it gives no flexibility...and property in Aus is rented as unfurnished about 95% of the time.

plenty of share accom and the best way to meet people.(or by staying in hostels)
  • Thanks for all your replies. I have said to her what happens if they want to part ways as obviously she's never been in their company for this length of time. Never thought of her being tied down and definitely think the idea of her booking a hostel/hotel for when she first arrives is a fantastic idea.

My cousin did that, went with 1 friend.. shes been over there 15 years!! The friend lasted 6 months and came home by which point my cousin had new friends and a job and didn't really need her 'from home' friend.

    have they changed it?
When my son went out there 3 years ago it was 6 months per job during the working holiday visa...
(yes he stayed on, was sponsored for a permie visa by his employer, married an Aussie girl, bought a house, baby due in March...)

It is a maximum of 6 months according to the information I read very recently.

However if she wants to extend her stay to 2 years, she has to do 3 months (88 days) in one of the country areas in one of the designated jobs that include agriculture, tourism etc before applying for the extension.

  • the WHV changes often...I am a citizen and have never looked into it but my British nephew had to do 3 months of rural work to extend to 2 years. I think several years ago it was 3 month working stints.

But there are loads of Brit students here and they all seem to find work and accom- I never see any begging!

They'd be daft to - an arrest would lead to cancellation of their visa and deportation .
