We fly with Icelandair from Manchester, as the Easyjet flights have never fitted with our schedule, so that is part of the extra cost. Car hire and hotels if you are travelling around are the two other big costs - if you are staying in Reykjavik you can find some good hotel deals.slopemaster wrote: »2000 a week is a bit scary.
But I like the house idea - whereabouts was it, and where did you find it?
The house we rented was this one http://nonnahus.is/ It's about 2 hours from the airport, and about 1.5 hours from Reykjavik - but it is well placed for Geysir and Gulfoss. The house was a bit of luxury, as it will sleep up to 10 (there were only two of us) but it costs no more than an average hotel per night. If you can persuade a couple of friends to go you could have a really cheap holiday. You'd definitely need a car to stay here though.0 -

We stayed in a cottage - cost about £100/night. Just google "iceland holiday cottages" and you'll come up with hundreds. In fact I'd highly recommend the place we stayed, but it's disappeared from the site since we went
Double advantage in that you can sit in your very own hot tub and scan the sky for aurora - perfection!
Edit to add: We used these guys for car hire: http://sadcars.com/. Their cars are all older, but reliable, with the advantage that you don't have to worry too much about gravel roads and the like, as the car is already battered! Highly recommended, we were very pleased with them.
Edited again to add - our cottage was just out past Thingvellir national park - easily on the 'golden circle' route and a drive along the south coast. Plenty to keep you occupied, and nice and dark at night for the lights.0 -

The Nonnahus also has a hot tub. I've only ever hired from Hertz as I've opted for a bit of convenience, with the car hire desk being immediately outside the arrivals. If you decide on hertz, book through hertz.is as it is cheaper than the .co.uk site.0
