Advice on new bathroom/wet room please.

Options
We have been awarded a grant to have our bathroom modernised to a wetroom for my disabled husband. They are taking out the shower installing a former and new shower fitting a shower curtain and making the floor and walls waterproof. They are not doing anything with the toilet or basin as there is nothing wrong with them and my husband can use them okay. I thought it would be a good idea to get these changed out of our money and have everything new. I was wondering about Vanity units where the toilet and sink are closed in, does anyone have any experience of wet rooms and can offer some advice, I was wondering if these units would be suitable or would they warp because of the moisture, we have got one of the plumbers coming round next week to quote for the councils work and I was wanting some ideas before hand so that I can ask them questions.

  • If it is a typical DFG type bathroom then they will just be forming the floor into a fall and then laying vinyl over the top; unless the bathroom is huge and the whb/WC are well away from the shower area it is likely that they will see some water at some point as the water often manages to get outside the shower area, particular when the user comes out of the shower area to dry off. Anything that isn't totally waterproof could end up being damaged.

Normally you wouldn't expect to see a vanity unit on a whb for a LAS as the normal practice is to allow space under the whb for the disabled person to sit and use the basin if needed so you'll probably find the Council and OT will recommend against it.

In short, it's possible but for the whb may not be practical and you need to make sure whatever is fitted is of a suitable material, the company doing the install should be able to source this for you.

Our neighbours got Keepmoat to fit their grant adaptation room, the standard of work is beyond outstanding, looks far more like a high end private fitted room than a council job, finished in 4 days from bath out to flooring down.
All walls are tiled in big modern tiles, new everything, toilet, sink, flooring coved up all round, really does look nice, top class tradesmen for each part of the job, not some jack of all trades.
They were not expensive as well compared to local firms, many who wanted to bang the price up and leave the old sink and toilet in and use cheap 6x6 council style tiles.
They managed the full job within the grant as well including building a new wider doorway.
I do Contracts, all day every day.

Thanks for the replies, we only have a very small bathroom which was why we took the bath out when we moved in and had a quadrant shower. I think because of this units wouldn't be suitable. I will have to try and think of something else for storage.

You can buy units that hang on the wall.

This is a company I use. They aren't cheap but it gives you the idea.
