Hi All,
Is it necessary to have under a car washed prior to an MOT in Northern Ireland?
Thanks.

No, not at all.
Having the car in good working order is what they care about....0 -
It is not required but once I year I would clean it and get it greased though for upkeep reasons and also helps show any potential faults that are happening to.0

Part of the mot is checking the condition of brake pipes etc. If they aren't clean they can't check them so could fail you for it. Also consider that the guy under your car is not going to be happy at getting covered in the crap underneath so is less likely to give you the benefit of doubt if something minor is wrong.0

I always do, it's common courtesy. I think the letter also says that if your car is too dirty they won't carry out the test.0

If something minor is wrong you'd rather know about it and get it fixed before it becomes a major... I have never once washed under the car, unless you've been rallying in mud fields I dont think you need to bother..0

An under-car wash in normal circumstances not required.
However if you have been in a field with a load of baked on mud the examiner cannot see the brake pipes etc , he can refuse to pass it
common sense really

Ive never washes my car for MOT0

As above, you only need to get an underbody wash if it's very dirty and the inspector can't see brake pipes, fuel lines and bodywork properly. I very rarely get mine done, it's only if I've been on farms or construction sites through work. No tester has ever remarked that the underside is dirty.
Not a bad idea to get it well cleaned now and again anyway as others have said, to show up any corrosion or damage, but to answer the OP's question, it's not necessary for an MoT unless your underside is extremely dirty for some reason.0 -
I have 4 vehicles put through the mot every year for 10+ years and never washed them pre mot & never had a problem. As long as there is no caked on mud at crucial inspection areas, brake pipes, ball joints etc0
