White Kitchen - Black Appliances - ESPECIALLY Fridges...

Options
Hi All!

What do other Moneysavers reckon to this - I'd post a pic, of the plan, if I could work out how to get the scanner working properly!!

OK, decided the kitchen in our 'upsidedown house' is to be open plan, so living area 10m x 6m to include the kitchen.

The units run 5m along one wall & wrap around to a 2m breakfast bar, backing onto the centre of the living space.

Units to be IKEA gloss white (already had gloss black, last house & gloss red at the flat, here!) & 'stone effect grey' square edge worktops, silver coloured plinth. Flooring laminate light beech colour. White glass mosaic tiles (the cheap ones from Homebase) as splashback.

BLACK cooker (Belling 'cos it has glass front panel behind the controls as well as door) & BLACK ceramic hob & splashback behind will be black glass. American style fridge gloss black, too. Stainless steel consetina Whirlpool extractor (rather than HUGE expensive glass things.

The fridge seems to be the questioanble area, we've had a white Samsung before without the problems mentioned in other posts, so BIG fan of these show off machines!!

Here's what we've seen, regarding the finishes ...

LG - looks as though the doors are machine polished, before packing in the factory, as you can see the marks from a polishing effect, rubs onto the casing, which is more dull - best use of interior space.

Samsung - seems a poor 'orange peel' on the door fronts, so not as smooth as we'd like. Might be me being over critical, comparing it to the vehicle paintwork I see daily! Good internal layout.

Whirlpool - sort of 'bumpy' paint finish, would prefer smoooooooth! Poor use of freezer space. 'cos of ice maker.

Electrolux - these seem to have a snakeskin/leatherlook finish & the casing has this too - OK interior space.

So what I'm asking, has anyone had BLACK big fridges/appliances & do the finishes I've described appear on yours?

& what do you think of the style/ideas/choice of colours?

What else would YOU want in the kitchen that we might consider?

Thanks in advance!

VB

I don't know if you can still get them but Maytag used to do one, under various brands, that took glass panels so you could have any colour you like, including black. ;)

  • I got mine from www.mosaictraderuk.co.uk - most of the colours are less than £15 a square metre if you want something more striking than white.
I got colour mixes for my bathroom.

    Hi Matty!

For the gloos black, we had Ballerina Pink, with Lavender Hue (from Focus own brand paint) on the chimney breast, above a black log burner. This would have been same colour, if we'd put the oven there.

The tiles were the Homebase cheap glass mosaic white, one sheet height, real easy to do, topped off with the black tile strps everyone sells.

Floor was the cheap glossy white 30cm tiles, with a few odd lines of black, from Wickes. But these are now discontinued. Looked good at night, as we had 9 adjustable downlights in the ceiling, bat the floor was always cold - so underfloor heating worth thinking of. & after we'd done it, realized it would have been better to have continued the laminate floor through from the lounge. That's wwhat we';ve done this time. It's limed oak colour - really light - almost white - & makes the place always look light n fresh & no problems cleaning!!

So all we did was 'budget priced' & everyone thought it lookd smart, so you'll have the same effect!! Much better than boring wood colours!!

Did have some pics, but they got deleted, thanks to Mrs V, messing about with things she shouldn't!

    Hope that helps

Silver aluminium IKEA blinds, Homebase grey worktops, but don't look like the sell anymore.
