smart meter, rates & switching

Considering switching to British Gas Fixed February 2017 via cheap energy club website. My question is will my existing smartmeters as supplied by Ovo engery continue to supply usage details etc to British Gas. Also the price quoted on the site is aprrox £200 less than my curent supplier, is this to good a drop to be true ???

Thanks

Is that an actual price or are you working from an estimated Direct Debit .

    HI Brooke123

The smart meter will lose its smart functionality when you switch, meaning you'll need to manually provide meter reads oncemore.

In terms of the savings amount, assuming you're comparing against your current tariff, your usage is accurate (ideally entered in kwh to avoid problems of your current provider charging incorrect dd amounts) then you should make the savings shown.

    Hope this helps.

Your smart meter will almost certainly not work in smart mode (send readings to supplier) after you switch supplier. It will be used as a dumb meter - it it goes wrong, the new supplier will replace it with a dumb meter.

Any other ancillary stuff (like a desktop display) should continue to work, but if it goes wrong, tough; no one will support that.

If you are coming off a fixed tariff then it is possible that the projected savings are inflated. Compare your annual cost for your present tariff with your proposed annual cost for the new tariff. This is shown on the MSE CEC website.

  • I have been waiting since July for my NPower Smart meter installation. NPower have cancelled two appointments to install, both at the last minute. The new appointment they have now made is for March. In the meantime they have told me I am unable to switch tariff or change my direct debit details to my new bank - Santander 123 - so on both counts they are costing me money. Is this legal? Or is it a scam to keep me from switching to a cheaper rate?

Hi - welcome to the forum. NPower are telling you huge porkies. You are free to switch tariffs or even switch to a new supplier. Changing your Bank is not something that any supplier should have a view on. There is no need to tell NPower. If you do it through the Bank switching service then they will change the NPower payee details for you.
