I very much doubt you could write it off. They may set up some kind of arrangement for you to pay them though.GE 36 *MFD may 2043

Having had admittedly limited head to head disagreements with Hmrc I can assure you the last thing they will let you do is write it off.From my own experience concerning less than £1500 I found they would literally follow you into hell to get it back,but then like yourself im not starbucks or Google.
Best you can hope for is a payment plan assuming you do owe the amount.........0 -
Hi
As the others have suggested I think it’s unlikely HMRC will voluntarily write off a debt. You could potentially use an insolvency process to clear the debt such as bankruptcy if you don’t have assets to lose, or a debt relief order (DRO) if you meet the criteria.
To qualify for a DRO you need to owe under £20,000 in total, have less than £50 per month available to pay debts with after your essential living costs, and don’t own assets worth over £1,000 or a vehicle worth over £1,000.

Is it actual tax you owe, or an overpayment of a benefit ?
If its tax, they can chase you for ever virtually, and can use all kinds of enforcement action against you.
If its a benefit, such as a tax credit overpayment, then these debts do become statute barred after 6 years.
However, that would only mean they could not take action through the courts to recover the money, they can still recover any money owed from any future benefit, such as your pension.
DRO sounds like the way to go, will sort it once and for all, and would remove any worries about future recovery action.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. I think it's best to be upfront, and try and see if you can come to some sort of payment plan with them . Don't ignore, or your bill will only get higher.
Hmrc= draconian / evil ( unless you are Starbucks etc)0 -
