  • Didn't do a tax return
  • Speak to them - people have had fines reduced. Explain why and try your best to come up with a payment plan for what is left.

    Paid off all Catalogues 10.10.2014
  • Did you ever fill out that missing tax return? If not, do the tax return for that year, as the original amount owing minus fines and penalties will be estimated and you may owe far less. They will revise that estimate for you and let you know what you really owe.

Secondly, do you have a valid reason for not filing? My husband missed his end of tax year because I went into labour just before it was due and once we had a newborn and toddler to juggle, it slipped his mind. He spoke to HMRC, gave them the filings, and they updated the huge estimate with something more realistic and removed the penalties for us.

You leaving it so long may make it harder, but you may get the fines and penalties reduced if you talk to them about any extenuating circumstances and discuss the affordability of the total debt.

So seriously, call up and talk to them. Gather up all your 2004-5 bills, receipts, earnings etc and file your tax return. See if based on affordability there's any way for them to write off some of the penalties - after all, these amounts aren't costs accrued, they're fines.

    Above all, good luck HTH

    Slight wording problem.

You still owe the money for the next 12 months but all interest, fees and charges have been frozen and the creditor cannot take any action against you.

In 12 months all debts outstanding at the date of the DRO order will be written off. If your circumstances change in the next 12 months you will be asked to pay the debts and the DRO is revoked.

Have a read of this... https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/debt-and-money/debt-solutions/debt-relief-orders/while-a-debt-relief-order-is-in-place/can-your-debt-relief-order-be-stopped/

You can get into further debt in the next 12 months and those new debts won't be part of your DRO and you will need to repay them.
