With hindsight, having seen that our wiring and CU were late 90s at best, we wish we had a full rewire done, even before we considered the major renovation we have done since.

We keep finding oddities- took 2 sparks around 5 hours last week just to work out what was going on with ring main/ bridges/ daisy chain affairs and it had tested just fine on moving in.

I have 2 wires that appear to do absolutely nothing in my CU and I found some very strange practices in some places (all in accessible areas so likely to be DIY bodges). In general though, the wiring was of a satisfactory condition and I'm glad I only did a CU change.

When I gutted the upstairs I did a complete re-wire of the upstairs ring and the upstairs lights, this summer I will do a complete re-wire of the downstairs ring (as it's accessible from the cellar) and then, as and when I renovate a room, I will do the area of the downstairs lighting circuit that I can access. (This is all done under the supervision of a sparks who will sign everything off once it is done).

If I was having to pay for it all I still would have split it up in to manageable chunks (though I would likely have done the downstairs lights while I had some floorboards lifted to do the upstairs ring) to save on disruption and to spread out the expense.

    Regards
    Phil

If it only it had been as simple as upstairs and downstairs rings..... Husband competent enough to spur off for a new socket etc (spark agrees) but even spark was a bit stumped by the rats nest under the floor. We know there is some more to do with the lighting wiring too but at least we now have a ring main (apparently we didn't til last week)

Just glad most of my wiring is easily accessible!

    £8.5k does seem very expensive.
