Hi
I've got a LACK shelf from IKEA that I want to use as a shelf across the top of a boxed in cistern in my downstairs loo. Is it possible to cut these shelves? THey seem to have some kind of metal fixing in the back.

Any help much appreciated.

I doubt if you will be able to. There is a large metal mount including two prongs that hold the shelf in place.0

If you don;t need the mounting's i'd be surprised if they are hard to get out. However I wouldn;t think it'd be very water resistant, even before cutting - not a good idea for a bathroom?0

The metal support bracket is shaped like this:
l_______l
The long bar runs along the back length of the shelf and the 2 prongs slot into holes either end. The bar is easy to get out, the shelf just slides off the bracket after you take the small screws out on the underside of the shelf.
However, I think I'm right in saying the shelf itself is hollow which means you can't cut it successfully without doing a lot of doctoring to replace ends etc.
Best just to buy a cheap solid wood shelf from B&Q and varnish it well to protect it from moisture.0 -
Thanks for your help. The moisture wouldn't be a problem as it is just a downstairs cloakroom but if the shelf itself would be unstable cut I'd better look around for another option. The thickness of the LACK shelf looked ideal and I had one sitting around with no use!
Many thanks!0
