Staining a new exterior wood door using Sadolin

Hi all,
I was in B&Q yesterday and bought some Sadolin Extra Durable Woodstain. It said on the tin that it neednt to be used with Sadolin wood preserver as the base coat. I asked the chap in B&Q if he had any wood preserver and he said I wouldnt need it and Sadolin says that becuase they want to sell you more stuff. Is that right?

Also - I bought a 2.5l tin. Is that too much to do one stable door (with 2 coats)?

Its Sadolins way of getting you to buy an extra product so he is right. Problem is if you have trouble with the door in the future and put a claim in Sadolin won't pay out because you didn't use the basecoat. The wording here is important so do they "recommend" or say you "must" use the basecoat?. You would probably get away with 1lt can but read what the coverage is. A standard door is only around 3.2 sq metres per coat so if you coat 3 times then its less than 10sq metres of stain required so have a look how many sq metres of paint a 2.5lt can will give you.

Personally I'm not a fan of Sadolins and much prefer Sikkens HLS or Filter 7 as its a much better product and doesn't need any basecoat unless its a particularly resinous hardwood like Iroko.

Thanks. Sadolin says "up to 15m²/litre". So I can probably get away with a 1l can.

I was just looking at Sikkens and they recommend "Combine a base coat of HLS plus with two coats of UV resisting Filter 7 plus for a superb finish that delivers optimum protection." So theyre basically saying the same thing as Sadolin but with their product.
