Can I renew the tax for my SORN'd car online?

I want to lay up a car, but may need it back on the road with little prior warning. If I have SORN'd it, can I then use the online service to re-tax it, or do I have to go into the post office / send it by mail?

As far as I know you can tax online as long as you have the V5 (logbook)

Yes...but i believe the shortest period allowed for a sorn is 7 days.
You can retax online after 7 days whenever you like...but it will be a full months tax in the first month even if you dont register til the last day of the month. If you envisage a reasonable short sorn period it might not be worth the hassle.0 -

I'd be interested to know where you got that 7 days period from, I am not aware of there being a minimum period at all.0 -

Have just purchased a second hand car, privately and the seller sorned the car on the Monday night we put the deposit down and we were not able to tax the car online until the following Friday.
VED/Tax website says 5 days from sorn.
Could have taken the V5c to the post office and taxed straight away but wasnt able as had corrected the name on the V5c with tippex so the PO wouldnt accept it

So, there's no minimum time for a SORN to run then. As I thought.0
