Gas Smart Meter Turned Itself Off

The meter is going to be changed on the 23rd February, which is a result because the recorded gas consumption is completely bizarre and random.
It begs the question, if this happened to an elderly customer or someone who didn't work it out, they'd probably have paid for an engineer to come out when the meter initially turned itself off, and probably wouldn't have realised the meter was then giving false readings.
I still think Eon should prioritise an incident like this and send an engineer straight away.0 -
Meter turned itself off again today (now twice in a fortnight) and we returned to a freezing cold house.
Ironically, the 'in house ecometer' said we'd used £7.50 worth of gas????:mad:0 -

Oh Gosh dprice1164
I think it's great you're having a new meter fitted, so yes that's a result.
I would like to think that id this sort of thing did happen to an older person, they'd contact us (smart) and we'd help them. But I fully understand.
Thank you for keeping me updated and if you do need my help, please ask. You know I don't work in the smart area, but can always get you in touch.

OP, I m surprised you say Eons smart gas meter has the ability to switch itself off because it would have to act as the very similar gas prepayment meter which has two flap valves located in it so that the meter switches itself when it completely runs out of all credits. I was nt aware that a standard gas smart meter has that function or valves in the meter to do a switch off. The word "off " displays on the meters I see, when its off. Is your meter an E6 Siemans smart meter. Its very similar to the "smart card " gas prepayment meter which has a slot at the bottom.0

sacsquacco,
It's a Landis+Gyr Libra 310p. It was installed by E.on about four years ago and as far as I'm aware, was their standard install smart meter at the time.
It hasn't been any problem until it turned itself off a couple of weeks ago and then again yesterday. It isn't a pre pay meter and I pay dual fuel by DD.
Looking at the spec., it's definitely got an internal on/off valve that presumably can be operated remotely.
I've not been told what the problem is, however it is being replaced later this month.

thanks, I stand corrected, yes of course these meters can operate in both credit and prepay mode and can be remotely switched from one to the other, so they would have the two valve flaps just below the in /and out unions. This is a meter also used by British Gas in large numbers. So far I ve not come across this happening with BG but its a serious flaw if, say, it can be hacked to just shut off the gas somehow, especially in the middle of a cold winter.0

I'm pleased to say that both meters have now been replaced with shiny new ones, which are working faultlessly.
I was told by the E.on engineer (who was particularly efficient and informative) that my meters were first generation and the new ones are third, with the fourth about to be introduced.
For my own part, I like smart meters but hate it when the technology proves unreliable.0 -

Good morning dprice1164,
Thank you very much for updating the thread and I'm so pleased that you've got the new meters.
Thank you
