Getting the keys on exchange?

The house we're buying which will be empty on exchange and the decor is somewhat tired. I was wondering whether asking for the keys at exchange so that we can get the decorators and carpet fitters to measure and price up would be a (un)reasonable request? The keys are with the agents at the moment.

If it's just to measure up and/or price the jobs, then I wouldn't imagine a problem at all. If you are in touch with the vendors, then ask them otherwise go through the Estate Agent.
Remember, though, that the property belongs to the seller right up until completion so you should do nothing to the property before then - neither add nor take anything away.

That was the thinking, the house needs total redecoration so that the sooner we could start (the planning) the better.

My relatives were in the same position. Their solicitor contacted the seller's solicitor and it was agreed that they could go in straight after exchange and start decorating. It took a bit of negotiation but they came up with an agreement in the end.
You won't know unless you ask, but I would suggest that it is not the estate agent you need to approach at this stage. You could ask the seller direct or do it through solicitors. I think your choice would depend on the relationship you have with the seller. (When we bought our current home my toddler son and I spent the day here with the seller so that it wasn't a strange place to my littl'un when we moved. She also did two loads of washing for me as my machine had broken down that day).0
