Neither parent has reached SPA yet (the OP has admitted that he got the MILs age wrong in his first post) so Pension Credit is not yet an option.

No, it's rising (for both men and women) in line with women's State Pension Age - so currently it's about 63, but rising quite sharply to 66 by 2020

Saying you are too old does not work ..Sorry for the pun !

You sill have to present yourself for work right up to retirement age unless the law has changed.

  • just a little update.

Mil is miles away from pension age - she officially retires in 2020,

Fil is job hunting like crazy, CV's going out daily and he is considering anything

His forces pension has hit any benefits payments he is may have been entitled to.

They have "battened down" their financial hatches and are cracking on with it

Your in laws have my (mental) support OP, I hope they find something soon. It's a terrific worry to me that I may be in the same situation as I'm the breadwinner with an invalid husband. I will surely be thinking of you and yours, dear.

You don't have to be at retirement age to claim Pension Tax Credit. Your MiL should at least look into whether or not she is eligible.
At least she won't have to worry too much about money if she can get PTC.

After all, you will never know if you are eligible for a benefit until you have tried claiming it.

You do have to have reached the retirement age for women to claim PC.
