Switching Gas & Electricity after 6 weeks

Back in December I changed Gas & Electricity company through the Cheap Energy Club. I went from Eon to EDF & have no exit fees on my new deal. However, EOn have now brought out a cheaper deal - does anyone know please if I am allowed to switch again through the cheap energy club after such a short space of time?

Comments

  • Yes you can switch, I've done so in the past without issue.

When you log into the Cheap Energy Club, it should show that the December switch is completed and when you compare you will get the latest tariffs and prices.

If by chance, the December deal is still showing as "switch in progress" in the results page then just email at energyclub@moneysavingexpert.com and ask them to clear down the switch in progress flag explaining that your switch completed at (given them the date)
  • Thanks for that. Yes, I've had an email saying that the switch is complete. Only outstanding issue is that EOn have sent me a letter saying they are still unable to produce my final bill due to not having the meter readings! A bit baffling as EDF had them on 24th December, and have already taken 2 direct debits.
  • Complaint to EDF, in writing, marking it as an official complaint demanding that they notify Eon of the opening/closing meter reading you gave to EDF on the 24 December. If EDF have an online complaint submission system use that, never phone as you have no record.

Alternatively MSE has a complaints tool at Resolver Complaints Tool which you could use.

Personally when I switch I give both parties the same reading on the switch day so that the losing supplier cannot say that the reading is different.
  • Thanks for that helpful advice. I'll contact EDF to put in a complaint. Useful tip for the future too re letting the old company know the meter readings on the day!

Your old supplier will politely say 'thank you' and ignore you. All meter readings on a switch have to checked by the data collectors. The new supplier passes on the validated readings to your old supplier. Sadly, it is not unknown for some consumers to provide incorrect readings - either because they have misread the meter or, deliberately, if they believe they can save a few pence.

    Hi SunnySaver

It's good you've given the readings to your new supplier. The way it works is that electronic messages pass between the two suppliers and certain third parties like the regional distributors, meter operators, meter reading agents, national database etc. These messages are used to let all those involved with your energy supply know about the changed circumstances.

As Hengus says, one of the messages concerns the meter readings. These are sent to us by the new supplier and come via a third party who check they're in line with past usage at the property. We'll use them to close your account and issue the final bill, usually within a couple of weeks of receiving the readings. The new supplier will use the same readings to open their account. This is to make sure the same energy isn't charged twice.

Any credit balance on the final bill will be refunded. If there's a Direct Debit arrangement in place, we'll refund it straight to your bank. If not, we'll send a cheque.

    Hope this helps explain SunnySaver.

  • I have just seen the reply from e.on. After the switch was completed on 24 December, I STILL haven't received my final bill. So I have put in a official complaint & am waiting to be contacted by the resolutions team.

    Hi SunnySaver

I'm sorry you're still waiting for a bill. I have to say, this does seem a bit long-winded now. As above, final bills after a change of supplier do depend on when we receive meter readings from the new supplier. I would, though, have expected them by now. Has the Resolution Manager dealing with your complaint advised whether or not we've received any readings? If we have, do you know if there's a problem with them?

Just to let you know, if you're unhappy with the resolution offered, you can send the case to our Review Team. They'll look at the complaint again both from your point of view and ours. They'll either uphold the original resolution or offer an alternative. If you remain unhappy, we'll send a 'Final Resolution Offer' letter. At this stage, you can go to the Ombudsman for an impartial ruling. Alternatively, once the complaint is over 56 days old, you can go to the Ombudsman at any time.

Hope this is of interest SunnySaver.
