Or what if a druggie who doesn't have money suddenly gets 20k and blows it on drugs?

then they end up with no benefits.

What if the druggie used to steal to feed his or her bad habit and was on benefits?

Sure there are so many in mental hospitals.

Wouldn't he over the course of a year or two be able to spend the money as he wishes or does he have to contact the dwp every time?

He could possibly enjoy a higher standard of living for a couple of years. Surely because he has savings he doesn't have to save it, although I would if I could.

Of course you enjoy a higher standard of living.

Newish car, holiday new clothes, new furniture etc.
    All are allowed within reason.
I just update HB etc monthly with bank statements and my award is adjusted.
