Advice wanted in regard to Share sale

Hi,would any body with legal knowledge care to advice me?
In 97 a share save scheme I was in matured and I was given some stock in the company I worked for.My intention was to sell them all, when I mentioned this to a client he offered to buy them.So being green I gave him the certificate and he paid me what they were worth. It soon came to my attention 6 months later that the sale had not gone through the proper channels as I kept getting new shares issued to me as dividends, which I passed on to him.He told me not to worry and he would "sort it".I n 2000 I left the company and the area and lost contact with him.
In the years since the company has merged twice and has now been sold.
All shares were withdrawn and a loan note now worth 5 times the original value is in my filing cabinet.Where do I stand legally if I can find him again and give him back his money plus compound interest for the last 10 years?
Regards
