Applied for American Express in UK....

I am relatively new to the UK, and am an American citizen. This means I cannot register on the electoral roll. I applied for an American Express card, and they asked for me to send off documents to verify my identity and address. I sent a bank statement from Natwest, and a copy of my Passport.I sent that off on Thursday and today (on a Saturday) I missed a call from American Express New Accounts. They left a voicemail and also sent an email. The email is as follows:

YOUR RECENT REQUEST

Reference Number: XXX (i've omitted the reference number)
Dear Applicant,

We appreciate your interest in an American Express account. To proceed with your recent request, please contact our New Accounts Department on 0800 032 7404 on option 2. Our hours of operation are Monday to Friday from 8:00am to 8:00pm GMT.

To help us serve you better, please provide the reference number shown above.

We look forward to speaking with you.

Thank you,
American Express

Do you think this means that I've got a good chance of being approved?

They are asking you to contact the 'New Accounts Dept' so it looks promising. But nobody can say for certain.

They may need a bit more info from you before they can make a final decision
  • Yes, I was thinking that too. But I didn't want to get my hopes up. They called on a Saturday but then email says the New Accounts Department is only open Monday to Friday. So of course, when I tried to call back, I couldn't get through. So I will have to wait until Monday to call them.

    You might be in luck.

I noticed a section on their accounts management site that appears to allow you to move your account with you if you move to a new country.

Never seen anything like that elsewhere.
  • Ahh, I think you're referring to the Global Transfer Program. I never had an American Express in America, except for a prepaid card. I just decided to apply to start building credit here. I will keep my fingers crossed and see how it goes.
  • Update: They approved the card with a £2000 limit. Kind of low, but I'll keep a good payment history and see if they increase it in a few months.
