Can anyone recommend a decent Network Printer, that is one with an ethernet connection, either a straight printer or a multi-function device.
I have seen the Lexmark X4550 in tesco's and it is pretty good, but I don't actually need wireless, I don't see how wireless is an advantage over a router and an ethernet connected printer, surely the router and printer in the same location would be fairly normal!
Any recommendations?

Anything other than lexmark unless you are a shareholder in lexmark.
What sort of printing are yuo looking at? colour or mono? any idea on the volume yor looking to print? daily or anual numbers are good?0 -
Wireless in a printer is there for the same reason that you have wireless PCs. It means you don't need to trail cables around your house/office, you just switch it on and its connected to the network.
As for a printer, do you actually need a network printer? Do you know that you can plug a PC into one computer and share it over the network. Though this does mean that to use it, the PC its plugged into must be turned on.0 -
Do you want colour or laser?0

Thats not a very good question, since you can get colour laser printers

I would imagine I am looking at colour inkjets.
I don't want to have a specific PC switched on - just the printer, but at the same time I would expect to have my router on (it always is) so bith router and printer in the same location and both switched on is perfectly acceptable - as I have said "surely the router and printer in the same location would be fairly normal!"
I have a router (USRobotics) that has a USB port but it isn't supported by USRobotics and doesn't indicate which ink cartridge is running out, USRobotics response is - get one of our printer servers, which is not the right answer - in my opinion.
As I have stated, I am looking for an ethernet printer - does anyone have a recommendation?0 -
Just get a Print Server. You can get them in both USB and Parallel connection flavours. They connect to your printer and the network and allow you to use the printer as a standalone networked one. They're only a small box and require next to no setting up.0

I would kind of agree with Conor over the print server thing it will give you a lot more flexibility over whihc printer you can buy. there are some great inexpensive to run inkjets for about £100 like the HP business inkjet 1000 idoesnt come in a network version but is a great printer and can deal with high outpt situations. Its ok with photos but if your looking to print photos you may want to go for a printer that uses 6 colours and black to get better prints.
You still need to give a little more info about what your wanting to do with the printer before we can advise better.0 -
Thanks for all the replies, but getting back to the original question, can anyone recommend a (inkjet) printer with an ethernet connection?0
