Refund of goods part-paid with gift voucher

I had a £50 gift voucher from House of Fraser that was about to expire. I bought a few dresses in the sale, paying £50 with the gift voucher and the rest on credit card. I intended to keep the best dress and return the others.

I've selected the dress but have now been told by House of Fraser that they will refund me £50 onto an e-voucher and the rest onto a credit card. So I'm back stuck with a voucher - when the whole point was to get rid of the thing!!!

Can they do this? I am really cross about it! I wanted the £50 to go towards the dress that I am keeping!

    How much was the dress?

Return everything, then use the e-voucher to buy the dress in a seperate transaction.

    It was £65.
Scared the dress will sell out - there's only one size left and it is GORGEOUS! And I want to wear it tomorrow.

Yes they can do it, they all do it. You get refunded the same way you paid, so you get the voucher back.

They are not stupid, they know people will spend vouchers in the hope to get a cash refund, your not the only one who has tried this.

That's not what I am trying at all - how rude of you!!! I am keeping a dress worth £65 - the voucher was £50. I wanted to pay for that dress with my gift voucher and £15 on my credit card. Instead I am getting my £50 voucher back and paying £65 on the credit card. The point of the order in the first place was to use the voucher. Unfortunately I am now in love with the dress!

They were not suggesting you were, just that some people do and they have taken steps to avoid this trick being viable.
  • B&q also have a policy of refunding to gift card for part gift card transactions. It is rather annoying, and not very fair in my view - but as I knew I'd be going back to spend more money there in the not too distant future I didn't complain or anything.

Not all retailers are the same though, ive had some "part gift card" transactions refunded to my credit card (although only up to the value I paid on the credit card of course).
