Connection of laptop to router

Hi,

Our pcs are connected to our DG router, our nephew years ago originally connected it all up for us, so I dont know much about router connection to pcs or laptops but I want to learn rather then rely on him to do it. I know about tapping in ip address in bar and getting up the router settings but I dont know if I need to change or do anything inside it.

My friend has kindly offered to give me her laptop she dont want anymore its windows 10.

How do I connect the laptop up to the router to get internet on the laptop?
Do I have to change anything inside the router settings online to make it work?

Do I have to initially connect a cable to the router from laptop to set it up?

I need instructions how to do this I dont have much idea but willing to learn? but at same time dont want to mess up anything inside the router settings.

Thanks in advance for your help...

  • If you have other devices already connected on wi-fi, this new laptop should be OK to connect; you'll need to know the router's SSID and the password.

Thanks for that, it seems that its quite easy then.

Yes I know the SSID and password on mine, says pass phrase.

So guess I just tap that into the laptop then when I get it and it will connect correct?

  • Go into your control panel and select network and sharing centre if you want wifi and select connect to a network, or cable connection should bring up a box to enter your u/n and p/w.
