Car Insurance - can I claim against someone elses without affecting mine?

My car was involved in an accident a couple of weeks ago. A car driving down a road opposite my house failed to stop at the junction and ploughed into a parked car, which then was pushed into my parked car. Said driver then drove off.

I informed my insurance company and was going to make a claim on my own fully-comp insurance (as we didn't know the other driver to claim against them) however upon looking at the damage in daylight the following day, decided against losing my no claims/paying a large excess and so cancelled the claim and paid for repairs myself.

Since then, the Police have actually traced the car although they can't ascertain who was driving at the time. They have confirmed that the car is insured.

Now that we have the details of the car, can I go back to my insurance and get them to claim of the other car's insurance to get my money back? Would this affect my no claims?

Thanks!
:p

You can't now make a claim off your own policy.

But you can pursue the third party insurer yourself to reimburse you.

That's great thank you. How do I do that if I don't know who the insurer is? Apologies for sounding thick!

I wonder if the other insurer can say someone else was driving under 3rd party cover so they wont be liable?

If that is the case the insurer providing the 3rd party cover will be liable.

Strictly, I suppose the person actually driving would be liable and indemnified by their insurer - but you are then dependent on the owner of the vehicle telling you who the driver was and then claiming against them.

If the driver for the other car can't be identified, i'm in the understanding you won't be able to claim from the car's insurance.
