Annual Boiler Service Cover
Hi
My in laws have a new boiler with a five year guarantee but need to get it serviced every year to make sure the guarantee is still OK. I am looking for a good but reasonably priced service contract for them please. Can any suggest any companies please?
Thanks

Hi. I am not sure that you actually need a service contract given that if the boiler fails it is under warranty. In such cases, your parents would normally contact the Company's service centre. Have you asked the installer whether he will provide an annual service? If not, then look at the manufacturer's website for a list of local heating engineers that the manufacturer has approved. This will stop any arguments over 'the boiler failed because you didn't use one of our approved engineers'.
FWiW - my boiler is ancient and I have an annual contract for the entire heating system including an annual boiler service for £150 per year with a local FM company. Domestic and General run a similar scheme but at a higher price. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Any local GSR engineer should be able to annually service the boiler - expect to pay about £50-£60 per service. (maybe less depending on location/local competition)
They don't need to get into long term contracts ... unless that is specifically what they want to do.0 -
Services don't involve very much so you may consider it better with a newish boiler to rely just on the warranty for the first period and general reliability after that?
I have a local guy I can call on and I asked him what the most expensive repair my WB boiler might suffer and he thought maybe a PCB at a couple of hundred pounds.
Bearing in mind that service contracts run at about £150 a year on that basis, once about 18 months had passed it was cheaper to wait for a failure and pay the cost. WB will themselves cover any repair including parts I think for £275 or thereabouts.
In 10 years or so since the boiler was first installed I have had just one failure (of the fan and sensor) and the repair was about £200. The service contract would have cost me about £1200 over the last 8 years.
Clearly if you want confidence then a contract may be the best for you but doing it this way came out cheaper for me. My local guy does the checks but that's all I have needed so far.0 -
Certainly agree with the post above; particularly as you have a new boiler with a 5 year guarantee.
All you need is an annual service - not a service contract - costing around £50, and any problems then will be covered by the guarantee.
Even after the 5 years I would 'insure yourself' as in the post above.0 -
Don't know your manufacturer, so this is just BAXI:

Which does Potterton as well.
You should use an approved engineer for your particular manufacturer, anyway, since the whole exercise is to get the service stamp/signature to keep the warranty valid.0
