Just a heads up to everyone. :)

All direct debits are covered by the direct debit guarantee.

Anyone expected to pay by direct debit must first be given "Advance Notice" of such a collection.

There are a number of requirements in place that state what the advance notice must consist of, but the 2 important ones here are:

    1. The amount of the DD to be collected

    and

    2. The date to be collected (and frequency)

Furthermore, if the advance notice is sent with other information, the advance notice must:

    a) Be given precedence over the other material

    and

    b) Appear under a prominent clear heading

I'm not sure if the email was supposed to be the official "Advance Notice" (it does seem very early in the process if so), but I would suggest if it was, it fails to comply with the requirements of the DD Scheme.

(I've not seem the an example of the actual email, so I cannot say what it's intended purpose is, but MSE Dan L obviously has seen an example and it appears to have confused him)

I'm over £170 in credit with my current supplier. I still can't understand with the estimated usage they have quoted me why the direct debit is so high.

I may be barking up the wrong tree here, but were you expecting the credit balance to be transferred over to BG? If so, that's not how it works.

No I simply stating that I am always in credit so couldn't understand why the BG DD would be so high.
  • I got the email this morning, and also thought my DD was set at £100. I was about to cancel, but luckily popped here first to look if anyone else had the same thing.

After reading this thread, I checked the email on the desktop using thunderbird, and it makes sense.

Seems that the email doesn't display properly on gmail, even on desktop.
  • Same here. I was a little horrified as my current payment to Sainsbury's is only £86 a month. I don't mind paying a little more because it's winter and to stop use falling behind, but £37 more seemed a little steep. I did tell the lady I got on the phone that the email was very confusing the way it was worded, which she agreed with.
