Savvybuyer wrote: »I know I referred to this before - I was just closing the screen down on my computer but have just noticed it - about me being the only person that follows what notices say (or tries to). I notice that the notice was “Please do not swear on stage. Instances of strong language will result in your performance being dropped from Radio 1’s live coverage of this event.”
If that were posted for me and, as the only person who would ever comply with it, I would have to seek clarification on what this notice meant if it took it any way seriously.
It says "do not swear". I would have to ask them what this meant:rotfl: - and what counts as "swear"ing, given that research shows that different people have different views and no word at all is considered swearing by 100% of the sample. (Some words, on the margins perhaps, get only 40%.) Then the notice says "Instances of strong language...". However, "strong language" is a different concept to "swearing".
They refer to "strong" language. However, some "swearing" is referred to as "mild swearing". How can it be "mild" swearing if it is strong (language)?
They're contradicting themselves again:rotfl:. Or maybe "strong" language, whatever that is, may be disallowed and some "swearing", that part of it which does not constitute strong language, be allowed? In which case, why does it say "do not "swear" and not "do not use strong language"?
Perhaps the intention is to avoid all swearing, but that only instances of strong language will result in the performance being dropped? In which case, why are artists required to restrict themselves beyond what is strictly and absolutely necessary in a democratic society and to cover things that would not result in their performance being dropped? In other words, the restriction beyond that which would do so being inconsistent with the qualified right to freedom of expression which the BBC as a public authority is bound by law to act compatibly with by virtue of section 6(1) of the Human Rights Act 1998?:rotfl::rotfl:
Just an example of how a notice that isn't clear in every way is taken by this Asperger's person if I am in any way meant to be taking the notice at all seriously in the first place.
In conclusion, clearly I can't be meant to be taking it seriously at all, since it is completely unclear, totally ambiguous and fails to define any of its meaning at all (but indeed, simply assumes that 'everyone knows what it means' when, in fact, if you analyse it, it becomes anything but clear), so I think I would probably ignore it!:rotfl:
I'd be a nightmare on Big Brother. "Please do not swear." Well, host, what do you mean by "swear"? (And then:orattles off all the research showing different words and different proportions of the sample that, when asked, consider different words to be "swearing" and other proportions which do not.) And, anyway, why do they ask them not to do that when it is already after 9pm? (Are they trying to avoid violence and associating it with that? It's not as if it always is.)
I'm closing that Guardian page now - and moving on. (Phew!)
Oh savvy I wish you'd been in my house last night :rotfl::rotfl: I inadvertently heard DS2 swearing  he was saying the F word at something he was frustrated at on his computer. I was shocked  and I obviously pulled him up about it.
in his mind it was my fault because I was within hearing distance when he didn't know I was there  :rotfl::rotfl: No remorse, no realisation that he shouldn't be saying the F word and he was definitely not apologising. He actually got quite indignant with me. Long story short was me resorting to threats of withdrawing computer time if he didn't realise that it wasn't acceptable to use that language...FULL STOP! He actually tried to negotiate with me  which I was having none of, of course. I actually sat down rather deflated afterwards wondering why I'd even been drawn into a conversation where someone (14 years of age) was trying to convince me that I was in the wrong for not allowing swears in my house
I'm not getting on with this thing of him towering above me at all. It makes telling him off very difficult. I don't need to do it often but looking up at him diminishes my authorityHe's convinced it's ok to say the F word at his computer because his computer can't be offended and if I get offended by it, it's because I shouldn't be listening.
He's not tied me in knots yet but he gave it a good go  :rotfl::rotfl:0 -
