Outwell Tent Isues

Wonder if anyone can help. We purchased a Vermont LP tent at the back end of last year (not cheap) but the roof protectors advertised for this tent were out of stock at the time of purchase. No problem we thought will order this year, so went to order one for our upcoming trip only to find out that they have discontinued the Vermont LP completely. After contacting Outwell there advice is to look on e-bay or Gumtree for one of these LOL.

My thoughts are that they would have known last year that they were discontinuing these tents but obviously kept it quiet so to get rid of stock. We are now left with a very expensive, and in our view, (incomplete) tent. Do our consumer rights protect us in any way, would be so grateful for any input.

Who will have known? Who did you buy it from? Shop assistants won't have any idea what's staying and what is going.!

Retailers rarely know in advance that a particular line is being discontinued, stock often runs out/very low then comes back in a lot more often than it runs out completely and then gets dicontinued so they probably didn't know. Unless the retailer told you it would definitely come back into stock then they haven't done anything wrong.

I'm not massively into camping and don't know much about tents but a search of the Vermont lp has revealed they had a 2014 version and a 2015 version so just basic research before buying would suggest they change them yearly.

Is it possible that you can get a generic one that will fit, may not be as good as the original but better than nothing.

Your left through an incomplete tent through your unwillingness to look elsewhere, what's the problem with buying it somewhere else?

They discontinue tents every year, sometimes its a design change, sometimes its a colour change.

So not only did they know the tent will be discontinued they know this years tents will be also.

Its not kept quiet, checkout the sales of last years stocks or all the new for 2016 items.

  • We have researched this to death !! They are specifically designed for that tent as any difference in dimensions would render them useless - this is their info not mine.

Funny that you chose to answer only one small throwaway line in one comment and ignore everything else.

It's an optional extra. Presumably a lot of people buy it without said optional extra. I doubt very many buy it without the optional extra while considering it incomplete, with a view to buying the optional extra a year later. In fact, I doubt anyone apart from you has ever done this.

Who did you buy it from, and did you make that person or organisation aware at the time of purchase that you considered the tent useless without the optional extra you intended to buy a year later? Nobody can tell you what your rights are without that information.

To answer your specific question, I am not aware of any consumer rights that will protect you from the situation you are now in, unless you made the purchase of the tent you bought conditional on the future availability of the roof protector. My understanding is this would still be the position even if the shop knew the roof protector was discontinued (except perhaps if they lied to you and said that it would be available). Sorry.

And the tent itself is £300 off now it's discontinued. Why, it would almost be worth someone who bought one a while ago and hasn't used it trying to come up with some bizarre reason to get their £1100 back off the original supplier and buy it there instead.
