No idea if PPI ever taken out and can't remember who I had accounts with

Hi I'm looking into claiming PPI. Got in touch with the claims guys recently to deal with the claim on my behalf. I know this site says do it yourself but I tried about three years ago without any success for me although managed to get some for my husband. All the companies said I had no PPI with them or couldn't find me. I know I have had several credit cards and loans since 1998 but can't recall who they were all with or whether there was any PPI. I'm hoping a claims company might unearth something. I can't really see any guidance on this site about how I myself can properly check what loans and credit cards I have had since 1998 and if I had PPI on them. Can anyone help as it will save paying out a third to a claims handler. Many thanks

    You get once chance to complain. If you did it three years ago, then you dont get another go.

    That isnt what claims companies do.

    Your data is not in the public domain. Only you and your lenders know. A claims company cannot find out.

  • Be certain you don't instruct the claims company to complain to the Banks you were already rejected by three years ago. If you do this, the CMC will charge you a fee for wasting their time.

    If you formally complained and had a rejection from the bank that is it for your complaint. If you just investigated but did not complain you could do a complaint now.

    Do note you need to have valid miss-selling reasons and you don't simply "claim back" PPI. Moreover, the fact you don't know who you used or whether you even had PPI means raising a case will be hard.

    A claims company cannot magic up information

    Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness: 

    People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

    Not entirely correct.

    If the bank failed to tell you in the letter rejecting the original complaint that you must take it to FOS within six months, you could still do so. You might also be able to persuade FOS that there were exceptional circumstances which prevented you from doing so before - but you would almost certainly need to provide evidence to support such an assertion.

    On the other hand if you simply made enquiries but not a complaint three years ago, the bank could argue that this "started the clock" for the purposes of the three year limit. This is because it is entitled to deny FOS permission to investigate a complaint about an event which occured more than six years ago if it can also show that it is more than three years since you ought reasonably to have realised that you had cause for complaint.

    It is, of course, more than six years since 1998.
