Claiming tax back - confused

I wasn't entirely sure where to post this but as it was travel related I thought here.

I recently came back from the States and bought a laptop over there, bought it back with me and paid the VAT on it at the airport. The customs man said I could claim back the tax I paid in the US but wasnt sure how I would go about it

Anybody have any ideas where I go from here? It was bought in Illinois if that is any help

Thanks

The customs man was wrong. You can't reclaim the US tax.

The only way you can do this is to have bought it in Louisiana, the only state to have a tourist refund scheme, or to have had the merchant ship it out of state for you.
  • Ahhh many thanks. You'd of thought the customs people would have known that d'oh!

    Always worth a try thou

    Thanks for the help :)
