Best app for streaming live from an android phone or tablet?

What is the best app for streaming live from an android phone or tablet? Is it Skype or something else?

Comments

  • Depends what you want to stream.

Kodi/tvmc are good for live streams but can be questionable legally.

VideoLAN Client (VLC) can be used to stream audio/video content over a network. You used to need separate client and server software, but most of the server-related features are built in to VLC now.

Ah, right. No idea about sending dashcam footage, but essentially you want a video-calling app of some kind.

Unfortunately, you'll need network access which is probably prohibitively expensive using a UK SIM card -- you definitely want to check what you'll be charged and consider getting a USA SIM for the trip.

And then... network coverage in the US is pretty patchy, I hear. Apparently it's not like the UK where you can get a mobile signal almost anywhere.

But assuming you can get a signal, and can afford to pay to use it(!), I found a few video-calling Android apps here. The articles are a bit old, but the suggestions still seem valid.

Skype is probably the most popular. If you are all on Facebook, that now does video calls too. Just remember that you and your grandchildren will all need to use the same app, so might be better checking with them and agreeing on one, and having a trial run before you go on holiday.

Hopefully you will be able to access free wifi, just be careful and avoid doing personal stuff like banking, unless you use a VPN.
