Possible stolen bank details

Hi,
I came home from work today and received a letter from tesco bank, in bold letters and numbers at the top of the letter was my sort code and account number, the letter also obviously had my name and address on.
The problem is, the letter was open, I was the 1st home, the letter was still on the matt behind the door. I rang tesco bank and the girl said the only thing that can happen with them details is someone can pay money in.
I've not yet shut the account as i haven't put nothing in it yet.
So what's the score with this? Is the girl on the phone correct and I shouldn't worry about it, or should I close the account and re-open another?
Thanks

None of the above details is a secret. All of them (except the address) are printed on all cheques that all people used to routinely hand out to strangers and companies. Now we still do this, although less frequently.0

A cheque is much worse, as you get a signature with it...No free lunch, and no free laptop0

So you've never, ever written anyone a cheque, then?
Yes, she's quite right.
Well, someone "could" set up a direct debit (like happened to Jeremy Clarkson) but the direct debit guarantee helps to protect people if that happens.
They certainly couldn't withdraw money directly to themselves.0 -
Thanks for the quick replies, you have helped to put my mind at ease.

probably opened by accident, if it was a dodgy posty you'd probably just not have received it.0

I was a postie for 22 yrs. you'd be amazed how many envelopes are'nt stuck down properly. If it was torn open then obviously someone has opened it. It may have been misdelivered and the person who opened it did it automatically before realising it wasn't for them and put it back in a postbox. Also, if you do an online transfer, you need the recipients sort code and acc. no. to send them the money. I've sent money this way many times.0
