Its to stop SPAM - Of course the majority on here already know SPAM using the Dollar is a futile attempt when it comes to trying to sell junk from across the pond. ;)

I think you need a certain number of posts.

In fact, the MSE forum rules actually tell you that:
    • Why do I have an "I'm a Newbie" note under my username?
    • Forum users who've been registered for less than a certain number of days with less than a certain number of posts have this under their username when they post. We hope it helps other, more regular forum users be more tolerant of new users who may ask questions that seem obvious to them.
New forum users can't initially post links. This is to help deter spammers advertising on our forum. The point at which forum users will be able to post links is "top secret" for the same reason
    Just a word of warning:
if you are thinking of posting SPAM links they'll be zapped pretty quickly and you'll probably be PPRd.

An explanation of PPR is also on MSE rules.

Hang on in there Erick, you will be able to post links after you've posted a certain number of posts. It's just to guard against Spammers.

And if/when Eric does spam the boards - well, now you know what the :spam: button is for.

And spammers don't last long on MSE. :p

One of the board guides was telling people to (mis)use the spam button to get rid of someone's posts the other day

    Really?

Was that via pm to certain users or on the open forum?

Whichever way - I'm sure that's against MSE rules.

Why wouldn't the board guide just report the user to the MSE mods?
Or lock the thread? That is within their remit.

    ETA:
I'm assuming the posts weren't SPAM as you posted '(mis)use'.

It was on the open forum, in the Arms and on Discussion Time. I'm pretty sure it's against the rules, too!

No they openly said to use the spam button to report abusive posts by that user so that the posts disappeared.
