    Hi. Just switch. At the moment there is no central communications system so if your new supplier cannot read your smart meter, you will have to send in meter readings. Sadly, it is likely that most of the smart meters in use today will have to be replaced by 2020.

    SMETS2 compliant meters will be released at some point during this year in order to assist in the cross supplier communication

    According to the Smart Metering Progress Report released late last year, you are not going to be very busy:

    An Early Rollout Obligation – a requirement on all large suppliers5 to take all reasonable steps to install, commission and enrol with the DCC 1,500 meters that meet the Smart Metering Equipment Technical Specifications 2 (SMETS2) standard, or 0.025% of a supplier’s total meter points, whichever is the lower, by 1 February 2017;

    Also, Utility Week are reporting that there are now some doubts that SMETS2 will be European compliant. Compliance is apparently needed for future energy purchasing/payments.

    No , unless you switch to either Ovo or Utilita who run the Secure Liberty smart meters. They may want to get that meter installed to act as a smart.. Your Eon electric smart will most probably be the Landys and Gyr which will be fine as "dumb " meter with everyone. I ve been with Eon with my BG Landys and Gyr smart meter and all was ok.

    In most cases, if you have a smart meter and you change supplier, the smart meter will no longer act as smart with the new supplier. But it should work as a dumb meter.

    If you want a smart meter with your new supplier, you will have to request a new one from the new supplier.

    Morning gemlbaldwin,

    Your meter will be fine if you change suppliers, but it will no longer act as a SMART meter, it'll be just a normal (dumb) meter that you'll manually need to read.

    Hope this helps.
