Our timber yard had two sorts of moulding (?) one on either side of the plank. No difference to application look etc but extra choice!0

You can also get MDF pre painted (not just primed), we used an online company for ours. They are slightly more expensive to allow for the fact it is painted and should be glued rather than nailed and they stocked various moldings, thicknesses and heights.
You will need to check your architrave (unless you are renewing these too) to ensure the thickness and molding you choose is compatible and height well it's just personal choice. The higher the ceiling the higher the skirting as a rule of thumb and if you have a period property it's easy to match the era to the molding. Or go completely modern with a square edge, choices are endless.0
