Conveyancers in Cambridge, UK

Does anybody have a recommendation for a conveyancing solicitor in Cambridge, UK?
As a first time buyer I've just had my offer accepted on a house and I need a conveyancer, problem is a lot of the 'reviews' seem to be made by the conveyancers themselves! Anybody got a good honest recommendation?
I'd just like a speedy process with great communication, and cheap preferably although paying a little extra for an easy process would be worthwhile to me. I have a few quotes but then I tend to delve deeper and find terrible reviews!

My recommendation would be SImon Cooper at BarElison, he has worked on many properties for me and has always been good and efficient. He answers communication promptly, I mainly use email which seems to work. I have bought both leasehold and freehold properties with him and done lease extensions.
However, he woks with a full service legal company, he is not inexpensive but he does things right and IMO you get what you pay for.
As you can tell I like the way he works, on one occasion I tried to use another practice as he was the conveyancer for the seller who was already doing a lease extension with him and in the end I backed out of the purchase because the conveyancer I was using was so difficult to work with.0 -
Rachel Dunne of Crossmans MTA and Marsucco Buttress also worth a look.
Neither are cheap (though I think Marsucco Buttress works on a no-exchange, no-fee basis). But then cheap and good rarely go together.0 -
Bear in mind your solicitor doesn't need to be local. You can use one anywhere in the country, just means that on a couple of occasions you'll need to post something you could have hand-delivered to save a day.0

Cambridge? They can be anywhere these days. I used RMNJ last time and they were pretty good and cheap.0

Another vote for Barr Ellison, but also Taylor Vintners, who've always been extremely efficient for me. Main reason I used them at first was they were within spitting distance of where I was working, but they did the job. They are not cheap!0

We went for NBM solicitors; dirt cheap. The service provided by a local solicitor (Cherry Hinton, CB1) was quite good compared to the fee they charged and it took just a month from instruction to completion.Mortgage: @ Feb. 2007: £133,200; Apr. 2011: £24,373; May 2011: £175,999; Jun 2013: ~£97K; Mar. 2014 £392,212.73; Dec. 2015: £327,051.77; Mar. 2016: ~£480K; Mar. 2017 £444,445.74

NBM I was considering them but there are so many bad reportson their web site of rudeness and delays.0

Thanks all, the reason I want to go local is so that I can physically walk in if I'm getting no communication etc.
Barr Ellison was taking my fancy, although I do worry they might be a little out of my price range. I'll email them today asking for a full quote. I completely agree that you get what you pay for, but house buying is expensive and I might need to find a middle ground!
I'm hoping as a first time buyer with no chain the process is going to be relatively stress free.0 -
That's interesting. I got the best quote with NBM but read some truly horrific reviews, one saying buying a house was 8 MONTHS in and they still hadn't completed! I'm not sure if they're worth the risk, although I'm happy for you that they worked out well for you, I guess it's a game of chance when you go cheap.0

Beware that cheaper outfits produce low headline quotes but come up with extra things to charge you with that aren't strictly required but you will want anyway (e.g. one common trick I've heard is charging for completing in less than 21 days after exchange, strictly optional but pretty much always wanted). For a reputable firm the quote will be the quote unless something unusual and particularly complex happens.0
