Cyclist hit and run

Got to put my 2pennies' worth! After watching that car crash programme on ITV I decided that I'd better put on high viz when I went for a short ride yesterday. Coming through a supermarket car park(not fast) a lady coming from the other direction decided to turn across me to get into a parking space. As she wasn't stopping, I had to remonstrate with her then went and parked up. On seeing her walking into the supermarket, I merely said" That's why cyclists get killed - you weren't looking." Her reply? " You saw me turning and just carried on going!!" I'm on a bike and you're in a big car turning across in front of me". All she had to say was " sorry, I didn't see you" - but there was no remorse at all. The video of the hit and run driver was gruesome, but we see this sort of thing every day. Glad to see the guy seems ok now. Please, please, give us cyclists MORE room - especially when overtaking. After all, we are human, too.0

I'm now firmly in the camp that motorised vehicles and cycles should not share the same road (at least in busy towns/cities) and more investment is required in infrastructure to separate them.
And where's all the space going to come from in busy towns and cities? Are you prepared to have your house/high street/local business demolished to make way for all this additional infrastructure? Infastructure your local militant lycra warrior probably wouldn't use anyway.0 -

You didn't have to remonstrate with her, you chose to. And after receiving a mouth full from you, do you think the lady will be more accomodating or less to the next cyclist she encounters on the roads?0 -

It won't make the slightest difference. She saw him and ignored him anyway.
Setting her car on fire and writing "Watch out for cyclists!" in fiery letters in front of it would have been more effective.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
(except air quality and Medical Science)

It is sometimes amazing to see how outraged people become when they learn what the law actually is......
In this case , the points are correct, but the fine does seem well below the usual level for the offence- it would be interesting to know why that was.
The police work with the tools (the laws) that they are given - it is a fact, and has been for a long time that in a few cases, the keeper of a vehicle may decline to name the driver (usually themselves) and take the 6 points rather than provide the evidence of who was driving and allow the more serious offence to be prosecuted. In contrast I drive every day, and whilst I have a healthy respect for all road users, I see every single a day at least one cyclist flouting the rules of the road and putting their lives at unnecessary risk.

I drive all day 5/6 days a week, 25 k business miles 10 k private miles and easily see several incidents of dangerous, selfish driving by all vehicles, including buses and lorries daily. Especially red light jumping. If there isnt a camera policing the traffic lights several cars will of course break the law and go through the red. A bike go s through a red and it sends the selfish gits in cars in a rage. UK drivers are getting more and more selfish with a lousy attitude to other road users. My partner is on a mobility scooter now and the selfish gits in cars are even turning on her if she has to venture on the road slowing them down. This motoring forum is reverting to type as expected and turning this "brutal " maiming attempt into a them and us petty battle.
Lets hope the guy who was rammed takes out a civil action, hes considering it. People on the Youtube forum have even offered to help. The Nottingham Police have come off the worst from this straightforward case and just dumped it. Mind you, thats what the Police do routinely nowadays with many crimes including burglary, they just dump it with no proper investigation .0 -

You really have no idea about the legal system and evidence have you?0 -
Thanks for our comment,johno100. No I didn't have to shout at her - I could have kept quiet and ploughed into the car. I was very restrained and only wanted to point out to her that cyclists are very vulnerable because some drivers don't pay attention. The fact I was getting at was that despite being very visible she still didn't see me. What more can I do?0

Yet they manage to do so perfectly in Holland...
Less than 1% of the annual transport budget in the UK is spent on cycling facilities, deapite recent reports showing that cyclists make up 24% of all London rush hour traffic.
The Government are actually going to spend more money on refurbishing just one tube station(Bank) in London than they are planning to spend on cycling facilities for the next 5 years.
Despite this when the Government haprs on about budget cuts due to austerity you'll find it's the cycling and pedestrian budgets that get cut long before the budgets for motorised traffic0
