Sometimes you just have to go on gut feel, and luck.
But four good tyres of the same decent make is always a good sign in banger territory.
A while back I wanted a load lugger. Local garage had a Volvo 240 for sale. Interior could politely have been described as "foxed", more accurately as "badgered" or possibly even "beared". Less politely, completely f*****. Quite a lot of gaffer tape. Very cheap accordingly. Volvo leather interiors do not wear well. Bodywork, though, was straight as a die (and on a 240 straight means straight). Four good tyres. Stopped, steered, and started fine. Mileage just sub 200k.
So I bought her.
Couple of after market seat covers, a bit of tinkering with the timing* and I had 50,000 miles and 5 clean MoTs before letting her in go for something "more interesting".
*I guess that some time in the past the electronic ignition had failed, and as a cheaper alternative as the car had been retrofitted with an earlier points ignition. It was trial and error to get her to the "just short of pinking" point under load. She'd also had an aftermarket twin choke Weber carb fitted - apparently a common occurrence on late carb model 240s as the Volvo carbs were about as complicated (and as dear to replace) as they come.0 -
'Her' has been used a couple times.
At what point is a car male or female :think:0
