Possible "Bright House" phone scam?

Someone telephoned my mother this evening, saying "This is [someone] from Bright House, your account is overdue by £46 and we need you to make a payment". My mother had never heard of Bright House, and told them so - and that she was certain that she had never shopped there or made any arrangement with them.
The thing is they asked for her by name - they weren't just fishing for whoever answered.

When she told them that they must be mistaken, they were quite willing to end the call and didn't seem to want to insist that she owed them money.

So the question is, was it;
  1. A legitimate mistake by them (unlikely).
  2. A phishing or payment demand scam using publicly available information.
  3. Someone having opened an account in her name (again unlikely as they have her phone number, which a fraudster would not have provided).
Thoughts?

    Possibly, get her to signup to noddle and clearscore for free and make sure nothing is showing.

  • I did tell her to sign up for the free thing from Experian or similar, but she wasn't keen.

    Today she phoned Bright House directly, they said "We don't have any customers coming up in that postcode", although that wouldn't rule out them for some reason having supplied a fake address but the correct phone number. Wouldn't make a lot of sense though!

    It's definitely sounding like a scam - but it's odd that she said that they definitely sounded like they were in a busy UK based call centre. I think the number came up as "Withheld" but it might have said "Unavailable" i.e. not sent.
  • Is she ex directory?

    Does she have a common name?

    Could be they had a customer go missing, and they calling all people with same name in that area.
