First Holiday Overseas

Sixth Anniversary Combo Breaker
Hi,

Myself and my partner are planning to travel to America this year for two weeks, but neither of us have ever travelled overseas. I'm not 100% sure on what to expect and would like to prepare and plan as much as possible before leaving it too late.

Does anyone have any useful travel information or links to sites with information?

Any advice is really appreciated!

I think you have to have a travel visa for the USA, however I'm not sure about Canada?

    Hi Chels32, welcome to MSE.

With America the first thing to consider is https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/ so have a browse of the website

For USA you will need an ESTA and at least 6 months left on your passport.
Credit card is the best way to spend so get one that doesn't charge for foreign currency, I use Saga Visa but I think Martin recommends the Halifax Clarity in his article on the main site. Get the card well in advance and use it before you go to build up a history so that you can increase the credit limit.

Know where you are going and have an idea of the sights that you want to see, America is BIG, really BIG so don't be too ambitious.
I have been to all of the states but it took me 15 years of travelling.

No need for the 6 months, it just mustn't run out while you're there.
