Sorry if this isn't where it's meant to be,I'm new to the forum!
I have a bad credit history although no defaults in the last 3 years.
I rang up to apply for a Co-Op cashminder and was told over the phone I had been accepted and just had to take my driving licence in to branch.
Maybe I sound stupid here... But does this mean I now have a bank account or what? I know I have to take the driving licence in but once they have it is that it open?
(I'm realising how stupid I sound!)
Thank you!!!

Yes - if your driving licence confirms what they want to get a proof of.mrsdavison wrote: »....does this mean I now have a bank account or what?0 -

No. It means they want to verify your identity in connection with your application. Following ID verification they will credit search you. You don't have the account until you get your account number and sort code. If you had their offer in writing it might be different but not a lot.0 -
Thank you
He did specifically say in the phone "you have been accepted. We just need to confirm your address from a document like a driving licence etc"
They need to be clearer! There must be more stupid people like me lol0 -
No. Without a search they wouldn't have told the OP that she was accepted.No. It means they want to verify your identity in connection with your application. Now they they just want to get the proofs that she is the person that was checked and accepted.
It's like insurers ask for a proof of NCD after the insurance was sold (not before).0 -

Half right: They need to verify an identity before they perform a credit search.
They can say the moon is made of green cheese on the phone and then later deny it. So can I, so can you and so can everyone.
As I said, if you don't have the account number and sort code you don't have the account. Or are they issuing accounts without an account number these days?
On the plus side, being free of defaults over the last three years isn't really all that bad.0 -
Lol ok.. Green cheese and NCB! I knew there was a reason I came here :rotfl:.
Well my driving licence proves I am who I am so hopefully I then get the bank details in the post!
If not, I'll start all over again! 😂
Thanks!0 -
I feel it means they need to confirm that you are the person they have been checking. It is all looking positive, but wait til you have written confirmation from them.0

So if I say I'm Prince Charles they will credit search Prince Charles and then ask me for ID to prove I'm Prince Charles?0 -
No, they can perform a search based on the information they get. Usually this information is sufficient and no further proofs are needed.Half right: They need to verify an identity before they perform a credit search.
Yes, this is called ID theft, that isn't uncommon. Hence the proofs required sometimes to fight it.They can say the moon is made of green cheese on the phone and then later deny it. So can I, so can you and so can everyone.
Well 'accepted' doesn't necessarily mean the account number issued there and then. It can take several days even if proofs aren't required. As I said, if you don't have the account number and sort code you don't have the account. Or are they issuing accounts without an account number these days?
When was the last time you applied for an account online or over a phone and was asked for proofs? I don't even remember despite having numerous accounts and applying regularly. So if I say I'm Prince Charles they will credit search Prince Charles and then ask me for ID to prove I'm Prince Charles?0 -
Maybe I should've been more obvious in my question.
The agent said "I'm just running a check for this basic account" pause.
"Good news you've been accepted for the account, we just need to see a document to prove your address"
Discussion ensued about driving licences etc.
I wasn't expecting a sort code and account number blurted out at me but what I wanted to know is once I give them my driving licence for them to "certify" (his words!) are they likely to the send me a letter saying we've declined your application?! Or is it pretty much done and dusted once I give in my driving licence?
Hope that makes more sense!
