How long is a piece of string?

There are quite a few developments going up around the area that we wish to live in but we are absolutely not in a place to buy right now.. will be by Dec 2017.
My question is how long do new houses take to build, when should I start looking etc? i'm somewhat of 'keen bean' and love getting the I-wants over houses but when should we really be looking at new builds to secure the best plots?
I'm a newbie to this whole process obvs so be nice

For houses/low-rise, if the builders have started on site now then at least some of them should be ready to move into by December.
For large blocks of flats it may takes longer.
Most developers release the plots/flats in phases so that they don't flood the market at once.0 -
I've seen some houses go up and moved into in a few weeks, yet there are often people on here who post complaining that their new build house has taken months with still no news of when they can move in.
Like you said, how long is a piece of string!0 -

Ha okay thank you. I'm off to the Help To Buy Roadshow on Saturday so we'll see what some of the developers say! Either way, boyfriend says stop looking for the time being!0
