leaving first utility

I am on First Utility May 16 v3 tariff which has a £30 per fuel early leaving penalty. I've read somewhere that I can leave about 40 days in advance. Also is the leaving date 1st May 2016 or 31st May 2016. I do want to change ASAP but obviously without penalty fees. Thanks

Best to wait for the supplier to send you notification before you start switching. Once you get that notification, it will also tell you that you can switch supplier without incurring any early exit fees.

In accordance with Ofgem regulations, suppliers must send you notice about your plan's upcoming end date 42 - 49 days before the end of your plan so that you have time to make a decision about switching.

If they fail to send such notice within that specified time frame, they cannot charge you early exit fees.

Contact your supplier if you are unsure of your contract dates.

Their tariff dates usually refer to the month-end, so almost certainly 31 May, meaning you need to wait till after 12 April (49 days beforehand) if you want to avoid an exit fee.
